Stop Unwanted Charges on Your Apple Account
If you have an active Apple subscription you no longer use, stopping it prevents future billing. Apple manages recurring charges for services like Apple Music, iCloud+, Apple TV+, and third-party apps downloaded from the App Store. You can end these subscriptions immediately using any of the device-specific methods below.
Cancel Your Apple Subscription by Device
Choose your current device below to follow the exact steps to manage and end your recurring charges.
Open Settings
Open the Settings app on your device.
Access your account
Tap your name at the very top of the screen to open your Apple Account details.
View subscriptions
Tap Subscriptions.
Select your service
Choose the active subscription you want to stop.
Cancel the subscription
Tap Cancel Subscription (or Cancel Free Trial). If you do not see this button, scroll down to find it. If there is no button and you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already canceled.
What to Do If Your Subscription Is Not Listed
If you follow the paths above and cannot find the specific subscription you want to stop, use these troubleshooting steps to locate the charges.
Check other Apple Accounts
You might be logged into a different Apple Account than the one you used to buy the subscription. If you have multiple email addresses, sign out of your current account and sign in with your other emails to check those subscription lists.
Look for third party billing
If you signed up for a subscription through Amazon, Google Play, a mobile carrier, or directly on a company website (like Netflix or Hulu), it will not show up in your Apple subscription list. For these services, you must log in directly to that provider's app or website to stop the billing.
Manage iCloud+ separately
Apple handles iCloud+ storage plans differently depending on your device's software version.
In iOS 18.4 and later, Apple lets you manage storage directly within your standard subscription list. Open the Settings app, tap your name, select Subscriptions, tap iCloud+ under your active list, and choose Cancel Subscription.
In iOS 18.3 or earlier, go to Settings, tap your name, select iCloud, and tap Manage Account Storage (or Manage Plan). Tap Downgrade Options, enter your Apple Account password if prompted, and select the free 5 GB plan to end the paid subscription.
Check Family Sharing ownership
If you are part of a Family Sharing group, you cannot cancel subscriptions owned by other family members. Only the Family Organizer or the specific person who purchased the subscription can stop it.
How to Request a Refund for an Apple Subscription
If you were charged for an accidental renewal, forgot to cancel a free trial, or no longer want a subscription you just paid for, you can ask Apple for a refund.
Refund requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are not guaranteed.
To request a refund, follow these steps:
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com in any web browser.
- Sign in with your Apple Account details.
- Select Request a refund from the dropdown menu under "What can we help you with?".
- Choose the reason for your refund request.
- Select the subscription from your list of purchases and submit the request.
If Apple grants a refund, access to the service will end immediately. If you cancel a subscription normally without requesting a refund, the service will remain active until the next scheduled billing date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does deleting the app cancel my subscription?
No. Deleting an app from your iPhone, iPad, or Android device does not cancel your subscription. The billing is managed through your Apple Account, not the local files on your device. You must follow the steps in this guide to stop recurring charges.
What does it mean if there is no cancel button?
If you navigate to your subscription settings and do not see a cancel button, but instead see red text with an expiration date, the subscription has already been canceled. It will run out on that date, and you will not be billed again.
How do I cancel a subscription for a deceased relative?
To stop billing for a family member who has passed away, you can contact Apple Support directly. You will need to provide legal documentation, such as a death certificate, to close the account. Alternatively, you can contact the relative's bank or credit card company to block the recurring payments or close the payment account.
